Where the differences come from

Publishers do not convert prices; they select a tier. Within the US PlayStation Store, each of the 30 titles sits on one of nine tiers ending in .99, from 14.99 to 79.99 USD. In other regions the same title is assigned to the corresponding tier in the local currency.

The euro carries the same number as the dollar. In 18 of the 28 PS5 games the German and the US price have the same figure, 69.99 for instance. But a euro is worth more than a dollar, and the European price includes VAT while the US price does not. That is why the euro zone pays well over ten percent more than the US.

Tax. In the US, store prices do not include state sales tax. In Europe and Japan the tax is already in the price: VAT in the EU ranges from 17 to 27 % depending on the country, the UK applies 20 % and Japan 10 %. The disparity in tax alone accounts for most of the price gap between the US and Europe.

Regional pricing. Stores give publishers tools to price each market separately. Valve's Steamworks documentation outlines three methods for converting a base dollar price into 37 currencies and 4 regional groups: by exchange rate, by purchasing power, or a combination of both. This explains why India, Ukraine, Turkey, Brazil and Argentina are 19 to 42 % less expensive than Poland, whereas Switzerland and Israel are 8 and 16 % more costly.

Exchange rates. Japan is 37 % more affordable because its yen prices sit on tiers of 8,800 or 9,800 yen, and the yen has lost a lot of value in recent years. Publishers avoid updating price lists every quarter, so a weakened currency keeps the market cheap until an adjustment is made.

Poland is priced in line with the West. The median gap relative to Czechia stands at 1 %, while the euro zone and the UK show a 1 to 2 % gap. Publishers equate the zloty price to the euro price, omitting the discount usual for developing markets. Poland does not overpay against the West; it merely lacks the reduction afforded to poorer markets.
